Takarazuka Moon Troupe – Ren Tsukasa performs brilliantly in center stage! ‘Minus 50 points’ for stumbling during curtain call

The junior performance for the Takarazuka Moon Troupe show All for One: d’Artagnan and the Sun King was performed on the 1st at the Takarazuka Grand Theatre in Hyogo Prefecture.

Ren Tsukasa, an otokoyaku hopeful in her 7th year as a member of the Revue, recieved her first junior lead in her last eligible year. She performed brilliantly as the sharp, youthful swordsmanship expert d’Artagnan.

As the junior cast member with the best grades, Ren was the ‘leader’ of the cast, and thus responsible for the speeches during the curtain call. “We kept this play’s motto, All For One, One For All, as our principle, and worked diligently to bring you this performance.” she stated. Due to extreme nervousness, she stumbled over her words. “I’m sorry for making such an awkward speech. I’ll reflect on this and work much harder next time,” she said, making the whole audience laugh uproariously, followed by thunderous applause.

At the interview following the performance, she said “When I looked at the view from center stage, I could feel how much responsibility came with my position.” She was very strict in grading herself, giving only 50 points out of one hundred: “when I was doing the curtain call, I was too overwhelmed by the atmosphere, so it’s minus 50 points for that” she said with a genuine smile.

The role of Louis XIV, who turns out to actually be a woman, is played by musumeyaku Yui Karen, who is in her 3d year with the Revue. It is her first time as a heroine, and she took on the challenge of a role with both ‘otokoyaku’ and ‘musumeyaku’ aspects. “Everything was a new experience, but the warm laughter and applause really saved me,” she said with a smile.

Furthermore, the niece of actresses Natsume Masako and Tanaka Yoshiko (both deceased), otokoyaku Kazama Yuno, played d’Artagnan’s rival Bernardo. Her presence and improvement were very appealing.

The Tokyo Takarazuka Theatre junior performance will take place on September 14.
