Lyrics: My Mother Bore Me (Phantom)

English translation of lyrics from the Takarazuka production based on the Off-Broadway musical.

(Some of the text of this song is based on this poem by William Blake…it was whitewashed in the process but I believe that this originated in English versions of the show.)

My mother bore me

Phantom:
My mother bore me in the southern wilds
Though I live in darkness my soul is bright
She taught me this

‘When you look up at the morning sun
You can see God smiling down
You can feel the time coming when your heart can rest
If you listen carefully you can hear the voice of God:
“Come, my beloved, come out of the shadows”’
When my mother told me this, she kissed me
She always held me close
With overflowing warmth
That mother’s love
I felt in you, Christine
So please

Though my face is hidden you can touch my soul, Christine
You are everything to me, Christine
The name I cry in the night is Christine
It’s far too sublime to even be called ‘Love’
I won’t let anyone have you
I’ll keep loving you
My own Christine!
