Rhythm – Towaki Sea, Snow Troupe

Rhythm was a Q&A feature for young otokoyaku stars published through 2016, with fun questions about the performers’ on and offstage lives as well as some drawings. The specific questions and number of questions vary between features.

Towaki’s was published in the March issue. (At this point she had not yet moved to Flower, so she is still listed under Snow Troupe.)

Some outtakes from the back of the magazine are also included.

Q: When has your awareness towards the stage changed?

In Sagiri-san’s dinner show SS, when I was ken-3. It was my first time being given such a large amount of sheet music, and there were only 5 of us altogether, so an incredible feeling of responsibility developed in me. It was a really valuable experience for me. Also, back then, Sagiri-san told me “I’ve always thought that what is important is to practice all of your artistic skills in order to become a cool otokoyaku, rather than just picking the one aspect you like and improving that,” and it was like a lightbulb went on! I started thinking that I needed to work hard to be the kind of otokoyaku I longed for.

Q: What is your favorite part of the stage makeup?

Even if it all looks weird, when I put the eyelashes on at the very end it all works out somehow (laughs).

Q: What do you want to become one year from now?

In a year I’ll be ken-7, in the most senior year of junior performances, so I want to have it together more. Also, I want to find the individuality that ‘Towaki Sea’ has, and have a clear vision of what I want to become in the future.

Q: When do you feel the difficulty of being an otokoyaku?

When I’m just standing. It’s so hard to have an otokoyaku-like presence while standing next to a musumeyaku, so I always think of how amazing my seniors are.

Q: What moment have you been you the most nervous onstage?

I get stage fright, so on junior performances or opening days, I get so nervous. So, I can’t point to something and say ‘This was the worst!’, but in a different way, I felt so nervous about putting Romero (Nozomi’s) cloak on her in Sorrowful Cordoba1. The more I thought about how I wanted to put it on her in a nonchalant way but also making it look cool, I’d get so nervous, and she let me practice on her in the wings so much (laughs).

Q: Are you someone who replies on LINE right away?

I’M SO SORRY.
I am slow.
When I see it I’ll think ‘Got it!’ and then completely forget to reply…

Q: Your signature…

Q: Do you have a drivers’ license?

I don’t…
But if I had time I’d love to get one!

Q: What fashion styles do you like?

My neck is really delicate, so I don’t wear many clothes without collars. If I wear something with an open neckline I’ll throw a scarf around it, or something like that. For colors, I like monotone outfits in white or black, but recently I’ve felt ‘just doing that isn’t enough!’ so I’ve tried to wear some more colorful things as well.

Q: What is your favorite seasoning?

Hararyoukaku’s Black Seven Spices! When I went to Kyoto on a school trip in highschool my mother asked me ‘buy some of this for me!’ and that was how I discovered it. I use it on things like udon and soba, but recently I’ve also realized that it’s great on katsu sandwiches! I really recommend it~

Q: When you’re doing something, do you make sure you have plenty of time? Or are you rushing around?

I try to plan for enough time, but then I’ll be too laid-back and in the end I end up rushing around (laughs).

Q: What are your favorite movies?

Titanic and Life is Beautiful. They’re western movies that are a little older, but they have such generous, gentlemanly men in them, and they portray such grand romances, so I try to learn from that.

Q: Please draw a self-portrait!

I put the ears a little too high…
My eyes are too far apart!?
The ear placement is definitely weird (laghs).

Q: Who are your favorite musical artists?

Ever since I was a kid in school I’ve loved western music, and even now I’m a huge fan of the Backstreet Boys. I went all the way to Shizuoka to see them in concert!
Nozomi-san told me ‘I think that if you listen to skilled singers your vocal chords might absorb that’ so I also make an effort to listen to a lot of talented male singers like EXILE.

Q: Who are your favorite celebrities?

Yoshino Keigo-san! I have nothing but respect! His singing and dancing are incredible, and he has such powerful charisma that once he attracts your attention you can’t tear your eyes away from him. When I was playing Marquis Crescenzi in Charterhouse of Parma, I brought a photo of Yoshino-san in Lady Bess to the salon and had them use that as reference for my hairstyle (laughs).

Outtake Photos

Though all through the photoshoot she was trying with all her might to achieve the ‘quiet, mature’ atmosphere, once in a while she would get an attack of bashfulness!
Hitoko (Towaki) wrapped herself up in all the white fabric to warm up. “This is so cozy~”
